The Super Mario Bros. Movie First Reactions Are In: “A Love Letter To Every Era of Mario”, “NOT Great, PERFECT”


The Super Mario Bros. Movie had been massively criticized especially due to Chris Pratt’s controversial not-so-accurate Mario voice. However, given the recent responses to Pratt showcasing he could actually do the Mario voice, fans were quick to change their minds on seeing the movie as something valuable of their time in terms of reliving their nostalgia on the iconic video game.

Now, ahead of its April 7 release in theaters, the first reactions are in from various critics sharing their first takes and reactions on the film on Twitter. Check out some of their tweets below:

Plenty of critics vastly enjoyed the hype ride, calling it “historical” and the “ultimate love letter” for Mario fans, some had also claimed that the 2023 film is the first animated movie they’ve called “perfect” since their first time watching the 2014 LEGO movie.

However, that said, not every person out there is going to enjoy the film as much as the next person, which could give the audiences some idea on adjusting their expectations on the film, some of which chose to leave their comment to indicate that “It’s a Mario movie made by Illumination and I’ll leave it at that” and practically found it more boring than entertaining throughout the run.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie features the typical structure introduced in the video game. The official plot synopsis reads: “While working underground to fix a water main, Brooklyn plumbers Mario and brother Luigi are transported down a mysterious pipe and wander into a magical new world. But when the brothers are separated, Mario embarks on an epic quest to find Luigi.”

The Super Mario Bros. Movie also stars Charlie Day (Luigi), Keegan-Michael Key (Mushroom Kingdom resident Toad), Anya Taylor-Joy (Princess Peach), Jack Black (Bowser), and Seth Rogen (Donkey Kong).

The film was helmed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic (who were also behind on Teen Titans Go!, Teen Titans Go! To the Movies) with screenwriter Matthew Fogel (Minions: The Rise of Gru, The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part).

The Super Mario Bros. Movie is slated to release in theaters this April 7!
