It's already been two years since Frozen 2 was released, and fans might be wondering whether another Frozen movie could be on the table for the near future. Given the mixed messaging we've got so far, and the fact that the story feels largely complete as it is, here's what you need to know:

Frozen 3: Will There Be One?

About the possibility of a third Frozen movie following the $1.450 billion box office of Frozen 2, directors Chris Buck and Jennifer Lee declined to comment extensively on the possibility of a new Frozen movie. Buck stated that after the first Frozen movie the team was "emotionally and physically spent" for quite some time, and it took them at least a year to even consider a sequel. "Ask us in six months," Buck characteristically said.

More than six months have passed since then, and no official announcement has been made about Frozen 3 so, if it's meant to be, it's likely in the early stages of its production. Remember also that the first Frozen movie came out in 2013, meaning that the sequel was released 6 years later.

The above suggests that unless the team who worked on the first two films makes an announcement, it's too early to tell. A lot of popular animated movie franchises, like Toy Story and Finding Nemo, for instance, have also been known to take their time, only creating new movies when it feels right, even if it means that the target audience will be a new generation of fans.

On the other hand, Frozen is a very popular franchise that introduced Disney with better female role models to a new generation of viewers while tackling themes such as sisterhood and eco-feminism, so an attempt to return to the story wouldn't be unthinkable. At this point, we have to wait and see.

Frozen 3: What Would It Be About?

Frozen (2013) left the door open to a potential sequel; the two sisters having another adventure together felt natural. However, Frozen 2 tied most loose ends, seeing both sisters in a narratively satisfying place. In that sense, a third movie doesn't feel like just what the fandom needs at this point.

To create Frozen 3 would likely mean to create unnecessary conflict between the sisters, or perhaps introduce a new threat, but it's rather difficult to imagine something fully original coming out of it. Therefore, the team would have to be really inspired if they were to deliver another successful movie that is not a sequel for the sake of it.
