Will there be a Toy Story 5? At one time, this question would have seemed impossible. The third installment in the franchise concluded an important arc in the toys' life with Andy, and, in many ways, it felt like a conclusion. Then Toy Story 4 came, and, quite frankly, it's easy to lose count from thereon. So, could another Toy Story movie come out, and when? Here's all we know so far:

It's wild to think that we first became acquainted with Woody, Buzz, and their adorable toy crew back in 1995. The heartwarming first film about the rivalry between the sheriff and the astronaut toys who competed for the love of their owner, Andy, won over many fans, making Toy Story 2 (1999) a natural continuation, along with much, much merch. Conversely, I still remember Toy Story gifts from McDonald's happy meals back in the day.

More than ten years would pass before Toy Story 3 would hit our screens in 2010, making us older fans feel very nostalgic. At the same time, it felt like the third movie gave the reins to a new generation of children, much like Andy – now a college student – gave his toys to a new child. In that sense, this movie could have been an appropriate conclusion.

Once again, the franchise surprised us, releasing Toy Story 4 in 2019, almost ten years later, with Andy's former toys being neglected by Bonnie, Woody meeting Bo Peep again and facing the danger of becoming a lost toy. Movie number 4 ended in an emotional manner (and which Toy Story movie hasn't?) making this feel very much like a finale.

While Toy Story 4 might have marked the end of the franchise as we know it, Toy Story 5 can't be ruled out yet. Producer Mark Nielsen has pointed out that they treat every Toy Story movie as the first and last, making sure it will live up to the high expectations the team has set for themselves.

For many fans, the first Toy Story will always be the very best, and, arguably, many franchises drag too long, outliving the welcome. However, Toy Story is known to take its time. A movie every two or so years would definitely feel forced, but if the team waits for the right moment and work as much as they need, another excellent, heartwarming and fun movie doesn't feel out of the question.

As of 2022, Lightyear came out, which, however, can't be described as Toy Story 5, given that it's an in-universe movie that Andy saw, which caused his desire for a Lightyear toy. The movie was a bit of a flop, suggesting that it is sometimes pointless to try reviving franchises that have already peaked.
