Yesterday, Netflix released the remaining episodes that complete the fourth season of You and boy, oh boy, were we in for a shock. There were so many of plot twists and turns that made You Season 4 Part 2, perhaps, the best season yet. We thought the third season was off the charts, but showrunner Sera Gamble managed to outdo herself this time around. Not to mention, Penn Badgley truly did a remarkable job in developing the lead character and giving it multiple personalities.

Now that we're done binge-watching the show, along with many avid fans, the next question we have is whether there will be a You Season 5. Here's what we know so far.

Has You Been Confirmed for Another Season?

As of this writing, there has not yet been any confirmation on whether You will return for a fifth season. Considering the show just released 24 hours ago, it's too early to tell its fate. But given that it is one of the most awaited shows on Netflix, there's plenty of hope for the show to get renewed for another season.

To add to this, there are some who believe plans for a fifth season are already in the works. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Gamble said:

“We have an idea for season 5 that we’re excited about,” she said. “It was never anyone’s intention to run this one into the ground. When we’re done, we’ll be done. And we’ll pack it up. Even in the early conversations with Penn, the idea was not to crank out episodes forever; it’s to feel like we have told the complete story."

While that sounds pretty promising, we'll have to wait until a renewal has been announced.

On March 24, 2023, Netflix announced that they have renewed the show for a fifth and final season. Along with the announcement, Netflix revealed that Sera Gamble will be stepping down from her role as showrunner for You Season 5.

“As I step back from day-to-day showrunning to focus on new projects, I’m immensely grateful to co-creator and all-around genius Greg Berlanti, Caroline Kepnes, my friends at Berlanti Productions and Alloy Entertainment, and our steadfast partners at Warner Bros and Netflix. Making the show alongside our writers, producers, directors, cast and crew has been an honor and ridiculously fun. And I feel lucky to have worked with an artist as gifted and thoughtful as Penn Badgely. I’m proud of what we’ve all accomplished and feel privileged to pass the torch. I’m excited to watch and support the You team as they bring Joe Goldberg’s journey to its delightfully twisted conclusion.”

For the fifth season, the script will be written by Michael Foley, who has been part of the show since You Season 1, and Justin W. Lo, who joined in on You Season 2.

When Is the Possible Release Date of You Season 5?

Again, You Season 5 has not yet been renewed so a release date is something we'll have to wait for.

If we look at the pattern of the show, however, we'll see that it takes five months for the show to start filming once a renewal has been announced. Production then takes place, which in the case of You Season 4, took almost a year for the first part to be released.

With this timeline, it's possible that the fifth season could get released by summer 2024; assuming the show gets renewed soon.

Who Could Star in You Season 5?

If You Season 5 gets renewed, it's possible that we'll see the return of Penn Badgley as Joe Goldberg, not Professor Jonathan Moore. After all, his relationship with Kate (played by Charlotte Ritchie) has helped clear his name from all speculations. Thanks to all that money and power that Kate inherited, Joe is able to return to the US and start a new life with Kate.

But as for who we'd like to see return in the show, it's unlikely that Marienne (played by Tati Gabrielle) will want Joe to know that she's still alive so she'll likely stay dead (at least to him). There's also the possibility that Nadia (played by Amy-Leigh Hickman) could reprise her role and be in contact with the remaining members from the past seasons, such as Ellie Alves (played by Jenna Ortega), Theo Engler (played by Dylan Arnold), and Matthe Engler (played by Scott Speedman); to finish up some loose ends of the story. Who knows, they just might be the missing link to finally put Joe in prison.

Given Ortega's busy schedule, however, it may be a while before she can come back to the show. Here's a video of Badgley responding to questions on her return:

You Season 4 had a crazy ending and we're still reeling in from the plot twists presented to us. So for now, we don't know yet what will happen in the fifth season of You.

But based on the past seasons, it's likely that Joe will have someone new to obsess about and will want to get rid of Kate. On the other hand, he really can't get rid of Kate since she owes a lot to her. But then again, when has that ever stopped Joe from killing or getting bored with his latest lover?
