What Is the Genre of Kaiju No. 8?
As mentioned, Kaiju No. 8 is an action, fantasy, and shounen anime that follows Kafka Hibino, a 32-year-old man who suddenly gained the ability to turn into a Kaiju himself despite his dream of eliminating all the Kaiju that walk the Earth.
It is an action anime in which characters like Kafka and Mina are fighting with the Kaiju, so expect a lot of action elements as the two face off with kaijus of different forms and sizes.
It is also a fantasy anime thanks to the existence of the kaijus, otherwise known as monsters, that suddenly appeared in the world to terrorize humans for whatever reason yet to be revealed in the anime.
In an interview with Manga Plus by Shueisha, Kaiju No. 8’s editor, Seijiro Nakaji, clarified that Kaiju No. 8 is not sci-fi and described the show as:
KAIJU NO.8 (Monster #8) isn’t science fiction, but rather, it portrays a world that is an extension of the everyday world we currently live in. The only difference from reality is that instead of natural disasters, monsters appear. It’s not a futuristic, fictional world but rather one that closely resembles present-day Japan. To emphasize this, Japanese motifs like shopping districts and swords are deliberately incorporated.
Still, MyAnimeList and LiveChart list Kaiju No. 8 under the genre of sci-fi to this day.

Will Kaiju No. 8 Have Any Romance? Fan Theories and Speculations Explored
Following the first episode of Kaiju No. 8, many fans are wondering if there will be any romance in the series, especially between Kafka and Mina, given their past relationship.
According to previous Reddit discussions, Kaiju No. 8 has no outward romance because Mina and Kafka have little to no interaction in the first parts of the manga series.
Rather than forcing the two of them together, it is best to anticipate the romantic development between Kafka and yet another defense officer, Shinomiya Kikoru, based on the events of the manga.
Still, there’s a little bit of romance in Kaiju No. 8; it’s just that it hasn’t been given emphasis yet, likely because the series is pushing it aside for more important themes to explore.
