Now that the Megamind franchise is coming back with an official sequel, fans are wondering why the evil genius doesn't sound like the original. This begs the question, is Will Ferrell returning to Megamind vs the Doom Syndicate? Is he being replaced? Here's what we know.

Is Will Ferrell Coming Back to the Megamind Sequel? Who Replaced Him?

As big of a pop culture cult the Megamind flick generated over the years, Will Ferrell will NOT be reprising his role as the starring anti-hero.

According to the credits in the official trailer for Megamind vs the Doom Syndicate, the leading former villain is not Ferrell's voice, but acclaimed voice actor Keith Ferguson's.

Keith Ferguson is one of the most prominent voice actors out there who is best known for lending his voice talents in various animated movies, series, and video games such as Overwatch, Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends, Teen Titans Go!, F is For Family, and more.

Still, fans can't quite put their finger on what to feel about the replacement for Megamind.

While DreamWorks and the former Megamind actor have yet to reveal why they decided to go down a different path for the sequel, there is a potential reason behind the recast.

Will Ferrell appears to have been choosing between returning for Megamind vs the Doom Syndicate versus playing the new character in Despicable Me 4.

Considering that the Megamind sequel has been long overdue on fans' bucket lists, Ferrell may have been looking for a new role to play in his career.

Not to mention, Megamind 2 was slated to release on March 1, a few months apart from Despicable Me 4's theatrical release on July 3, which could have been one of the reasons why Ferrell could only commit to one animated flick to work on.

In this case, Ferrell lent his voice to be the additional member of Gru's growing family as Gru Jr. in the Despicable Me 4 trailer, which you can check out below:

Apart from Ferrell, Tina Fey, who voiced the reporter Roxanne Ritchi, is also not reprising her role despite the character's appearance in the sequel trailer.

On the other hand, original lovable Minion voice actor David Cross will be returning to once again assist his boss on his reformed gig being the superhero in town.

It is worth mentioning that it remains unseen as to why Will Ferrell chose Despicable Me 4 over Megamind 2, or whether there are other possible factors involved. But you can stay tuned for more updates on this story, though.

Fans can start streaming Megamind vs the Doom Syndicate once it debuts on Peacock on March 1.
