Will Ellie Die in The Last of Us TV Series?
Who would not love the spunky attitude of Ellie and her jokes from "No Pun Intended, Too," right? She's one precious girl, not only for those who care for her but for the whole remainder of humanity and as it turns out, she holds the possibility of a cure to the cordyceps fungus.
In the finale of The Last of Us, Season 1 Episode 9, titled Look For The Light, Ellie is too close to death, a few inches to it, as she almost went under the knife for a surgery that could be the cure to the cordyceps infection and possibly the future of humanity.
The thing here is, for everyone to be saved, Ellie must die. The theory of the doctor of the Fireflies is that the source of Ellie's immunity must be extracted to reproduce a cure that could be given to thousands of survivors, if not millions.

Earlier in the episode, it is shown that her mother was scratched moments before she was born, thus, Ellie has been immune from start of her life and when the cordyceps got inside her system, the fungi recognized her as if she is the same to them, thus, being immune.
This makes Ellie one, if not the most, valuable person still alive. However, to date, she remains to be the only person like that, thus, the Fireflies wants to get the best of her. She was inches further from the knife, already sedated, but thankfully, Joel was there to save her.
In the game, Ellie survives until the end of The Last of Us Part II, that means that she could also stay alive even after the end of the second season as it has already been confirmed to come next for the TV series.
Whether Joel's decision to save Ellie is right remains a question of morality, whether to let one person die in exchange of humanity, or just let the world stay as it is, after all, humanity has survived for decades already.
