Why Spider-Man is a PS4 Exclusive for Marvel's Avengers

Spider-Man is officially coming to Marvel's Avengers as a PS4 exclusive character and fans are pretty pissed, with many saying that it's a disservice to the hero. Unfortunately, despite how fans feel about the movie, it's actually not too surprising since Sony owns the PlayStation and owns a good percentage of the character, as recent movies have shown. While we get why it happened, this still isn't great and shows just how bad the console wars are.

Grace Rudolph from Beyond the Trailer fame wasn't too surprised by the move, tweeting out about how much Sony owns the character. Some fans have pointed out how Spider-Man has still appeared in games like Marvel vs Capcom Infinite and Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3, the former of which came out on multiple systems while the latter was a Nintendo Switch game, but it seems like Sony pulled some strings here.

Considering how Marvel's Spider-Man and its spin-off game Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales are exclusive to the PS4 and PS5 respectively, the news was expected. Still, we hope that those with an Xbox One or gaming PC have some other exclusive characters like Wolverine or Rogue, who have been X-Men and Avengers respectively.

Many of us are hoping that Spider-Man eventually comes out as paid DLC for other consoles but that probably won't happen. As it stands, he will likely remain as a PS4/PS5 exclusive until anything big happens. Then again, with rumors that Microsoft might buy out Warner Bros. game division, Batman games could end up being Xbox exclusive in the future.

Fans can pick up Marvel's Avengers this September on PS4, Xbox One, PC, and Google Stadia. The game will then get a next-gen upgrade for PS5 and Xbox Series X. Spider-Man will come to the game sometime next year.
