Why Nick Fury wasn’t in the Final Battle of Avengers: Endgame

Avengers: Endgame managed to bring together all of the MCU's greatest heroes in one spectacular scene, but the attack on Thanos didn't include one major player—Nick Fury. In a roster full of heroes, it just looked like there was no place for Fury from a writer's standpoint.

Talking during the San Diego Comic-Con (via ComicBook), Endgame writer Christopher Markus revealed:

"I don't think we ever put him in… It was [because] we have such a traffic jam of heroes and so much power, that to have a guy who, in combat, would just be firing a gun... it doesn't come off well for Nick Fury, frankly."

With all the Wakandan ships coming in from the portals, I could imagine that they could've had Fury on a SHIELD helicarrier, but with the time it took to gather everyone, I don't think it would have been realistic to suddenly give Fury access to a ship in such a short period of time.

Besides that, I think one of the Chitauri whales could have easily taken down the ship.

Despite Fury's absence in the climax, he still manages to have the most MCU presence for this year. Besides appearing as his younger self in Captain Marvel, Fury was also in Endgame and Spider-Man: Far from Home. We don't really know when he appears next, but I imagine he's going to have to explain whatever he was working on in the post-credits scene in Far from Home.

Catch Nick Fury in Spider-Man: Far from Home now in theaters.
