Why Melissa McCarthy Thought The New Ghostbusters Trailer Was “Very Confusing”

The trailer for Paul Feig's forthcoming Ghostbusters has not been received positively by fans and critics alike, to say the least. In fact, the trailer has been the fodder of negative criticism, even resulting to fan-made videos mocking it.

Apparently, even one of the movie's lead stars, Melissa McCarthy, found the trailer confusing due to the fact that it made the film look more like a sequel than the reboot that it's supposed to look like.

During a recent interview on the Johnjay & Rich radio show at iHeart Radio, the 45-year-old comedienne was asked about the Ghostbusters trailer and whether it takes place three decades later since the opening says "30 years ago" and all.

McCarthy explained:

It's a reboot. I know, it's weird that they said the ‘30 years ago' because in this movie, the first one didn't happen. It's that great story, but told totally differently. It's the same thing of four unlikely heroes, it's in New York City, ghosts are taking over. It's the same classic story, but it's not a '30 years later.'
Believe me, the question was asked. I was like, ‘I think that's very confusing,' but then everyone said, ‘We don't care what you think.

Too bad nobody listened to people who asked the question. By the looks of it, there has been confusion between the filmmakers and the studios, which more often than not create the trailers. It's not entirely surprising if the marketing team made some sort of adjustment. It's understandable how Sony probably wanted to reference the original film due to its popularity, but it's a bit annoying since the new Ghostbusters apparently isn't entirely connected to the old film.

From what we can glean from this interview, there might be a chance that the new Ghostbusters is actually better than what the trailer is suggesting.

Ghostbusters opens July 15.
