The "Master of all villainy" is returning to our screens this March. However, based on the trailer alone, a lot seems... different from the original flick. Why is Minion called Chum in Megamind vs the Doom Syndicate? Here's what fans think.

When Megamind was sent off to Earth, the first companion he was provided with was a piranha whom they call "Minion." As his parents told him, "Here is your minion, he will take care of you."

Not only is Minion his role to take in Megamind's life, but it also happens to be the name he goes by.

However, this time, when fans search for the list of cast members joining (or returning) Megamind vs the Doom Syndicate, one thing pops into mind: who is "Ol' Chum"?

The film has appeared to change Minion's original voice actor, David Cross, to Josh Brener (The Last of Us and Star Wars: Resistance) as well as the character's name to Chum, for some reason. So, what gives?

Fans Explore Why Megamind 2 Replaced Minion's Nickname

Fans have been scratching their heads, thinking about the changes Megamind vs the Doom Syndicate underwent despite being fully connected to the original flick.

Their main theory seems simple enough. Since Illumination is under NBC Universal, and the same studio acquired DreamWorks Animation on August 22, 2016, fans put two and two together and speculated they wouldn't want 2 "minions" in the separate animated franchises.

So, the ongoing Despicable Me franchise gets to keep the term "minions" for Gru's lovable yellow workers, while Megamind lands with Chum.

Renaming Minion into "Chum" sounds friendlier than simply referring to his best friend as a "minion", after everything they've been through.

Although the studio has yet to address the sudden name change, fans are unhappy with how things are turning out for the long-anticipated Megamind sequel:

It is also worth mentioning that apart from Megamind 2, we'll also be expecting a 2024 TV series to be released on the same day (where Minion is still called Chum).

Meanwhile, Megamind vs the Doom Syndicate debuts on Peacock on March 1.
