Why Does the British Public Seemingly Hate Meghan Markle?

Meghan Markle is probably one of the most-hated women, with the number of negative claims and news about her since she joined the royal family upon marrying Prince Harry in 2018. Things worsened when the couple stepped down as senior royals and moved to the U.S.

Though it’s impossible to pinpoint where the hate comes from, especially among the Brits, several factors are behind the backlash.

Her Race

According to The Grio’s Touré, “part of the real problem is race.” The royal family is considered the “whitest of the world’s white families.”

So, when he married the family, it seemingly forced everyone to see “Black and white as equals,” which was “extremely frightening for people who valued whiteness” and saw the royals as “an important symbol of it.”

Meghan was said to bring Blackness into the royal family, showing the world that white people were no longer a superior race.

For others, royals should only marry their kind to maintain their so-called “specialness,” and Prince Harry’s wife broke that notion, triggering the people who valued that belief.

“A biracial woman enters the top of the pyramid by marriage, negating both the birth and blood requirements society had previously been told were preconditions,” freelance writer R. S. Locke explained in 2021. Because she lacks those prerequisites, she’s considered unworthy. Because she’s proud of her own heritage and regards herself as equal to others at the top of the pyramid, she’s considered ungrateful.”

She was hated because she undermined these rules. And when the media hit her race, the royal family never stood up for her.

She’s an American

Compared to Kate Middleton, who comes from an aristocratic British family, Meghan is an American with an ordinary background.

The Princess of Wales receives a warm welcome, while the Duchess of Sussex is welcomed with a “cold and hostile reception.”

She seems not to meet the Brits’ “conservative criteria,” resulting in her being heavily disliked.

Has a Twisted Family History

The royal family has been known for maintaining a clean image of the monarchy, opposite Meghan’s unconventional family relations.

She has broken ties with her father, Thomas Markle Sr., and has a distant and remote relationship with her step-siblings. Hence, her so-called twisted family history doesn’t meet the Brits’ conventional requirements.

She’s an Actress

Another reason Brits don’t like Meghan is because she’s a former actress. Though she’s lauded for making a name for herself in Hollywood, British conservatives aren’t fond of her TV and movie roles, especially in her hit TV series Suits.

She Defies Royal Family Traditions

Meghan is also heavily criticized and condemned for breaking royal protocols and traditions. She always listens to her heart and does what she believes is right despite defying the royal family’s rules.

She’s Blamed for Royal Split

Meghan is also seen as the reason behind the royal split, which resulted when she and Prince Harry left the monarchy. Hence, it’s heavily regarded as “Megxit.”

The couple aimed to be financially independent, though they intended to support the then-monarch, Queen Elizabeth II, continuously. However, the British public blamed her for the exit instead of looking at the factors that made them decide to leave.
