Why Did Reg Go to the Surface in Made in Abyss?
It is unknown why Reg goes to the surface in Made in Abyss at the time of writing.
Going down memory lane, Reg appears just as the Crimson Split Jaw monster is about to devour Riko. He not only fires an incinerator, but he also appears to save Riko's life, as if he was programmed to do so.
Reg is constantly saving Riko throughout the anime. When she's in trouble, Reg will save her, even if it means putting his life in danger. It was not due to the pressure he felt from everyone who cared about Riko, but rather to his genuine desire to keep Riko safe regardless of what happened.
It's almost as if he's programmed to do so. Reg is, after all, a robot.
Reg is seen in the manga looking for his Haku. The term Haku refers to one's most valuable possession in Made in Abyss. Hence, we can safely assume that Reg is searching for his Haku as he ascends from the depths of the Abyss.
Perhaps it was Riko, for whom he had been searching for a long time. After all, they had a bond that was far stronger than any other relationship. We know they're friends, but there's a lot more to them than meets the eye.
There were many theories about Reg's purpose because of the mystery surrounding him.
The first stems from Reg's relationship with Riko's dog. Based on his appearance and equipment, some believe Reg is Riko's dog. The collar on Reg's gear is a dead giveaway as to their relationship.
Reg also behaves like a dog, always following Riko. Even if it appears absurd, this theory is not impossible. The magic of the Abyss is so unpredictable that relating Riko's dog and Reg as one is plausible.
Another widely held belief is that Riko's mother, Lyza, sent Reg to the surface to assist her in reuniting with her child. Lyza was thought to have used Reg's abilities to have Riko down in the Abyss and be together again.
