Since Demon Slayer Season 2 ended, fans have been curious about a lot of things: what will happen in Demon Slayer season 3, was Tanjiro’s dad a sun breather, will Tanjiro become a hashira, and so on. But one of the mysteries in the series is related to how it all started: why did Muzan kill Tanjiro’s family?
Fans have their own theories, like the family is living in the mountains so no one would look for them or Muzan knew that the Kamados are sun breathers, which are related to Yoriichi Tsugikuni, the sun-breathing swordsman who almost killed him.

Why Did Muzan Kill Tanjiro’s Family?
While the Yoriichi Tsugikuni theory can be connected to Muzan’s plan, which is to eliminate every threat he has, it was officially revealed in the last arc of Demon Slayer why he kept on slaughtering innocent people. Muzan Kibutsuji only has one weakness: the sun. He wants to create a demon who can withstand that weakness so he can enjoy his immortal life to the fullest.
In order to do that, he has been sharing his blood with human beings, hoping to find someone who can handle a massive amount of his blood and be able to walk in the sun. Muzan did the same for the Kamados and only Nezuko was able to survive. What was even surprising is that she is the demon he needs as she has the ability to survive sunlight, as revealed in the Swordsmith Village arc.
Muzan’s plan is indeed successful, and the only thing that is hindering him from attaining a carefree immortal life is Tanjiro. Of course, Tanjiro will never let Muzan consume Nezuko. The demon slayer did everything he can in his power to save his sister and avenge his family, even to the point that he would risk his life to achieve his goal.
In the end, Muzan’s plan never worked out for him as choosing the Kamado family was his biggest mistake that led to his end. Tanjiro and Nezuko survived the greatest battle in history, with Nezuko eventually returning to human form after.
