The Netflix series follows the mystery behind the murders of the husband and sister of Maya Stern (played by Michelle Keegan). As the series unfolds, however, Maya learns that her husband, Joe (played by Richard Armitage), is not really dead.

It was later revealed that Joe killed Claire and made her death look like a home invasion gone wrong. In the process, he made it look like he had also been murdered.

So why did Joe kill Claire in Fool Me Once?

After seeing the evidence collected by Corey (played by Laurie Kynaston), she agreed to help investigate the family. As it turns out, Claire had uncovered and leaked company secrets about Joe's family, the Burketts.

She had been working as a pharmaceutical scientist at Lampur Pharma, one of the companies owned by Joe's family under the Burkett Global Enterprises organization.

It was revealed that the family had long been involved in unethical practices, such as manipulating patient trial data and covering up fatal side effects.

Claire had also discovered that her brother-in-law had committed other murders, including the death of a yacht captain involved in bribery.

When Joe found out about Claire's involvement in the leaks, he took measures into his own hands. Once Claire was dead, he made the crime scene look like a failed robbery. Meanwhile, he was able to retrieve the evidence that Claire kept.

After becoming suspicious of her husband, Maya confronts Joe about his involvement in Claire's death. She also realizes that Joe would not think twice about killing his wife.

What Joe doesn't know, however, is that Maya has replaced his gun with a fake one. She had already discovered that the bullet that killed her sister came from the gun that she and Joe owned.

Using the same gun, she shoots Joe in the act of self-defense, which leads to his (real) ultimate death.
