  • Quick Answer: Christopher Nolan cast Travis Scott because he views rap as the modern equivalent of oral poetry, honoring how The Odyssey was originally shared by bards.

Christopher Nolan recently explained why he decided to cast rapper Travis Scott for a key role in his highly anticipated film The Odyssey.

While a lot of fans have been excited for the release of the upcoming epic film from the Oscar-winning filmmaker, it has also already received early backlash due to some of the creative choices, including the modern-looking armor of the warriors and the casting of non-white actors. Now, Nolan is addressing the criticisms.

In a recent interview with Time Magazine, Nolan explained why he decided to cast Travis Scott to play a bard in The Odyssey following the backlash to the casting.

He shared that the Grammy-nominated rapper's involvement simply had something to do with the poetic nature of the story, similar to rap.

"I cast him because I wanted to nod towards the idea that this story has been handed down as oral poetry, which is analogous to rap," he said.

Nolan also addressed the criticism towards the design of the armor of his warriors, where some fans felt that it was similar to the Batsuit in The Dark Knight.

"There are Mycenaean daggers that are blackened bronze. The theory is they probably could have blackened bronze in those days. You take bronze, you add more gold and silver to it, and then use sulfur," he said.

"With Agamemnon, Ellen [Mirojnick], our costume designer, is trying to communicate how elevated he is relative to everyone else. You do that through materials that would be very expensive."

The filmmaker assured that he took a painstaking approach to ensuring the accuracy of portraying Ancient Greece, similar to what he did in Interstellar.

"For Interstellar, you’re looking at, ‘What is the best speculation of the future?’ When you’re looking at the ancient past, it’s actually the same thing. ‘What is the best speculation and how can I use that to create a world?’" Nolan said.

"Hopefully they’ll enjoy the film, even if they don’t agree with everything. We had a lot of scientists complain about Interstellar. But you just don’t want people to think that you took it on frivolously."
