Dragon Age is a series of fantasy RPG video games unfolding in the fictional world of Thedas. The games are influenced by European folklore and medieval romances, but they're still quite modern, featuring a great number of complex female characters and lgbtq+ characters, and often drawing from current events such as the refugee crisis.

The first game, Dragon Age: Origins, focused on a completely customizable player character who joined a legendary order of warriors known as the Grey Wardens to defeat monsters and end the Blight that was the result of their appearance.

Dragon Age 2 followed Hawke, a Blight refugee from Ferelden, as they make their way into crime-trodden Kirkwall, where they rise from criminal to champion.

In the third game, Dragon Age: Inquisition, a new customizable protagonist who survives a cataclysmic event and becomes the only person capable of closing the resulting Breaches - tearings in the sky from which monsters emerge.

The Dread Wolf is an old elven god associated with betrayal or rebellion.

Depending on everyone's interpretation, he's a revered or reviled figure in the Dragon Age lore, and many characters throughout the game use the curse "May the Dread Wolf take you."

Only in Dragon Age Inquisition is it revealed that the dread wolf is Solas, one of the Inquisitor's companions.

In a recent post in the Bioware blog, the Dragon Age Team said about the game:

"Solas, the Dread Wolf. Some say he might be an ancient elven god, but some say not. Others say a betrayer of his people…or a savior who now seeks to rescue them at the cost of your world. His motives are inscrutable and his methods sometimes questionable, earning him a reputation as something of a trickster deity—a player of dark and dangerous games."

They went on to say that even those gamers who haven't played the previous Dragon Age installments will be able to enjoy it.

Is Solas the Dread Wolf In Dragon Age 4?

Ever since fans found out that a new Dragon Age game was in the making, they always knew it would be about Solas in some way and this was apparently confirmed through the title of Dragon Age 4, Dragon Age: Dreadwolf.

The revelation that he was the Dread Wolf was shocking - unless you have noticed that, in the previous Dragon Age media, your character also ends up a pawn in a mage companion's grand scheme.

But is he necessarily the titular Dread Wolf of the fourth game in Bioware's Dragon Age series? He likely is, given Bioware's explanation, but could there be more to it? Note that the dread wolf was always styled as two words but the title of the highly-anticipated fourth installment is Dreadwolf.

This has caused fans to suggest that rather than being only about Solas, Dreadwolf could refer to a plan or organization related to him. Of course, any further information about the game is currently under lock and key, so we'll have to wait for further updates later in 2022.
