Komi Can’t Communicate follows Shoko Komi who suffers from a communication disorder. This disorder prevents her from communicating with everyone, including teachers and her family. At first, no one knew about Komi’s case as she was the most popular girl in school because of her stoic beauty and elegance.
Her presence makes people nervous around her to the point that no one would dare to talk to her. This helped her hide her secret. Only Hitohito Tadano, an average schoolboy who sits next to her, discovered her disorder. He then decided to help her find 100 friends. In the series, viewers were introduced to different characters with intriguing personalities. Most of them like Komi while some prefer to challenge her and be her rival.
Who Is Komi’s Greatest Rival in Komi Can’t Communicate?
As of this writing, there are two rivals shown in the anime. Yadano Makeru first appeared in episode 4 during the physical exams while Netsuno Chika was introduced during sports day in episode 10. For Makeru, she claimed to be the rival of Komi without letting latter know. Even if Komi never accepted the rivalry, Makeru tries her best to win over the female protagonist.
Makeru competes with Komi in grip strength, long jump, and other physical-related challenges she could think of. She would try to beat Komi in a race and not mind how she looks while running. What was interesting about Makeru’s personality is that she does not hate Komi at all. She is actually inspired to be better because of Komi, and this is why it was no longer a surprise that the two eventually became friends.
Meanwhile, Netsuno Chika is the opponent that Komi met during the relay race. At first, Netsuno thought that Komi was just a cold person. But her perspective of Komi changed when she saw that after Komi fell, she was still determined to win. Netsuno then decided to give her all to the point that she was able to beat Komi by a short length.
In chapter 212 in the manga, the Sports Festival race, the two were against each other during the relay race. Netsuno won again, making Komi frustrated. Netsuno was amazed to see this side of Komi and said that Komi can always challenge her anytime. The two of them became friends after.
It appears that no one will ever be Komi’s greatest rival as the people around her eventually wanted to become her friend after getting to know more about Komi. While it is interesting to see rivals every now and then, it is even more entertaining to see how these rivals become allies.
