Final Fantasy VII Remake is a game of the year contender, no doubt about it, but this title might also end up becoming infamous for restarting the waifu wars that many thought stopped after Persona 5. Unfortunately, this game, plus Persona 5 Royal, and Kaguya-sama: Love is War has brought back this deadly piece of internet discussion so here's hoping we don't lose any good people to this.
Inside Games (translated by Jin) actually polled Japanese fans on who the best female characters of Final Fantasy VII Remake are. The fans cheated a bit since they also voted for Barret and Cloud in a dress but we did get our final three. In the end, Jessie managed to get third place while Tifa beat out Aerith to become the "best girl" of this video game.
This is actually one of the hardest waifu wars to participate in since Final Fantasy VII Remake managed to characterize Aerith and Tifa so well. Aerith is an adventurous flirt who knows more than she lets on while Tifa is a conflicted rebel who wants to fight for her beliefs while not hurting any innocents in the process. Tifa is definitely a worthy holder of "best girl" in Japan but this must have been tough for fans to vote on.
Most people prefer to ship Tifa with Cloud since Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII showed us how cute Aerith's relationship with Zack Fair was. Aerith dating Zack goes all the way back to the original Final Fantasy VII so these are pretty canon ships, to be honest.
Final Fantasy VII Remake is now available on PS4 and will come to other gaming systems next year.
