It’s highly possible for fans of mecha to be familiar with Gurren Lagann or have seen it at least once. Aside from the great storytelling, the main character’s development throughout the series is something to look forward to.
Created in 2007, Gurren Lagann or Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann is an original anime series by Gainax. It follows the story of Simon and Kamina, who were part of humanity that was forced to live underground, their villages isolated from one another. The current ruler of the planet, Lordgenome, was behind this. Upon reaching the surface, Simon and Kamina learn more about the world and humanity’s enemies. Their fight for humanity’s survival begins.
The story’s main character is Simon, a shy and reserved boy who works as a digger in Giha VIllage. He lost his parents early due to an earthquake. His best friend is Kamina, who is also his older brother figure. One day, while digging, he encounters a relatively small mecha and a drill-shaped key. The small mecha resembles the face of a Gunmen, which is a mecha that attacks humans in the surface world.
After a Gunmen attacks Giha Village, Simon ends up piloting the small mecha. With the help of Kamina and Yoko, a girl who was apprehending the Gunmen, Simon and Kamina finally reach the world above.
While the series does focus on robots fighting each other and humans staging revolutions, the story does have a bit of a romance element on the side. Some people might be wondering, who does Simon end up with? Or does he even end up with anyone?

At the beginning of the story, Simon developed feelings for Yoko. However, due to his shy nature, Yoko was probably unaware of this. It seems that Yoko was also trying to make advances at him during this time, but he failed to understand this as well. So when he accidentally sees Yoko and Kamina kiss, this breaks his heart. However, as the story progressed, the two remained good friends and comrades.
Simon found Nia Teppelin in an abandoned container of some sort. He was pretty much interested in her since the beginning. He takes her back to Team Dai-Gurren, where she was made aware of the recent events. She tries to cheer him up by motivating him and telling him that he isn’t useless or helpless. As Team Dai-Gurren’s journey continues, their relationship develops.
During the time skip, their relationship developed even further. Simon proposed to Nia, who accepted. However, a sudden turn of events caused her to emerge as the Anti-Spiral messenger during the Anti-Spiral War arc. He eventually gets her to return to her old, usual self.
At the end of the battle, Simon and Nia finally get married. Their marriage doesn’t last long, considering Nia’s basically a virtual lifeform. Both of them knew that this would happen eventually and have accepted their fate. In the epilogue, Simon still keeps the wedding ring close to him.
