Giant fighting robots may not be everyone’s cup of anime tea, but Gurren Lagann has the potential to appeal to watchers who generally don’t watch mecha. The story is set in a future where humanity lives underground in their respective villages, isolated from each other and the rest of the world. Simon and Kamina are residents of Giha Village who dream of reaching the surface. 

Simon, a digger, ends up encountering a drill-shaped key and an unusually small mecha. One day, a giant mecha called Gunmen attacks their village from above. Simon ends up piloting the small mecha he found—which looks like the face of a Gunmen—and along with Simon, they destroy the Gunmen. Upon reaching the surface, Simon and Kamina are finally introduced to a new part of the world, where humanity is fighting against a common enemy for the sake of their survival. 

Gurren Lagann is an anime that isn’t an adaptation of a manga or light novel. It’s an original series released by Gainax in 2007. It has a total of 27 episodes—which means if you’re a regular binge-watcher, you can easily finish this in a day. Following the series’ success, manga and light novel adaptations were released, and also two movies.

Simon is the main character of the show. He’s initially presented as a shy and quiet boy who lacks confidence in himself. Kamina is his older brother figure, serving as his shoulder to lean on. Kamina is the opposite of Simon, which is why Kamina acts as Simon’s motivator throughout the series.

At the beginning of the story, Simon is a 14-year-old boy. The second part of the story skips forward to seven years, which would make him 21 years old. The epilogue moves forward to another 20 years, so Simon is 41 by the end of the show.
