What Is Monster About?
Unlike what the title might suggest, Monster isn't a fantasy anime. It is a mystery anime that follows Dr. Kenzo Tenma, a celebrated brain surgeon who must reckon with the human monster he accidentally created.
When Kenzo chooses to honor his vows to save lives instead of seeking to advance his career, he doesn't know that his choice will come back to haunt him.
Presented with an ethical dilemma whereby he's asked to abandon the boy he's operating on in favor of the town mayor, Kenzo refuses.
The boy is saved, but the mayor dies, and with him, Kenzo's social status.
Years later, Kenzo finds out that Johan, the boy he saved, is a serial killer who can sweet-talk anyone into committing suicide.
Upon learning that, Kenzo begins his journey in post-reunification period Germany to find Johan and make amends for what he perceives to be his own mistake.
Not only is Kenzo an engaging and conflicted protagonist, but Johan is a really terrifying villain and one of the smartest anime characters of all time; always a step ahead of the doctor.
The ethical dilemmas and the question of accountability about crimes one could not predict are discussed in engaging ways.
Monster provides no easy answers, thus, it's a manga that will stay with you for a long time.
