Back in 2017, the James Mangold-directed Logan film was released in theaters, and many fans believed that it would be the last film of Hugh Jackman as the physically-enhanced mutant known as Wolverine. After all, the 20th Century Fox film, which was based on the Old Man Logan comics storyline by Mark Millar and Steve McNiven, follows an aged Wolverine and a sick Charles Xavier (Professor X) who defends a young mutant named Laura from the villainous Reavers.
The end of Logan clearly shows Jackman's character die and get buried, but recent news revealed that his iconic X-Men character would return, but when is Wolverine coming to the Marvel Cinematic Universe?
Keep on scrolling to find out everything we know so far about Hugh Jackman's MCU debut as Wolverine.
When is Wolverine's MCU debut?
On Sept. 27, 2022, Deadpool star Ryan Reynolds took it to Twitter to share exciting news for Deadpool 3. After explaining the challenges that have come with re-imagining Deadpool in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Reynolds said that he had "nothing"...besides one idea.
“Hey, Hugh,” Reynolds said as Jackman shows up in the background, walking behind a couch. “You want to play Wolverine one more time?”
“Yeah, sure, Ryan,” Jackman casually replies as he walks up a flight of stairs.
With that reveal out of the way, the Reynolds also announced that Deadpool 3 would be released in theaters on September 6, 2024, so expect Hugh Jackman's return as Wolverine and MCU debut on that date.
But didn't Wolverine die?
Well, yes, and no! While the 2017 Logan movie did indeed kill Jackman's version of Wolverine, it's worth noting that the film didn't necessarily fit into the proper Fox X-Men films timeline. It's also possible to consider Logan the film as featuring what we now would consider as a Variant version of Wolverine, so even if Jackman's X-Men character died, it's possible that Deadpool 3 will feature a totally different Variant of Wolverine. We could see a more comics-accurate version of Wolverine, and we could finally see Jackman the classic yellow-and-blue Wolverine costume.
On Sept. 28, 2022, Reynolds and Jackman released a second video that addresses the question about Logan. They acknowledged that the movie takes place in 2029, and clarified that it's a "totally separate thing" and they're "not touching that."
What is Wolverine's role in Deadpool 3's story?
Beyond Reynolds and Jackman, Marvel Studios has been keeping story details for Deadpool 3 under wraps. Leslie Uggams is confirmed to appear in the third Deadpool film, presumably reprising her role as Blind Al, Wade Wilson's confidant and roommate.
Zazie Beetz, who played Domino in Deadpool 2, also said that she'd be open to returning to the franchise but she's currently in the dark on whether that will happen. "I don't know. We'll see," she said during an interview with Variety. "I would love to do more Deadpool, but that's me."
This article will be updated with more story details once they are officially revealed by Marvel Studios. You can read everything we know about Deadpool 3.
Is Hugh Jackman finally putting Wolverine's classic yellow suit in Deadpool 3?
Hugh Jackman has played Logan/Wolverine for about 17 years across nine films, yet he's never appeared in the character's iconic yellow suit. Fans was shown a brief glimpse of the famous outfit in a deleted clip from 2013's The Wolverine after Logan received the costume as a gift, however, Jackman never used the outfit in future X-Men-related movies.
There are rumors that Jackman will finally wear Wolverine's classic yellow suit in Deadpool 3, but that hasn't been officially confirmed yet.
While it's too early to tell if Jackman will don Wolverine's yellow suit in Deadpool 3, an artist on Instagram that goes by the username @Subi.Ozil, shared a new concept art that imagines how Jackman's new suit could look like in the third Deadpool movie. As you can see in the embed below, the artist decided to omit Wolverine's mask from the look.
Is Wolverine, Deadpool, and the X-Men universe finally merging with the MCU?
Now that Disney already owns the film rights to X-Men properties, including Deadpool and Wolverine, fans are expecting the universe of the mutants merge with the universe of the Avengers and other Marvel characters in the MCU, so it's likely they will merge via the multiverse.
The MCU's Phases 4,5, and 6 are collectively referred to as The Multiverse Saga, so there's a great chance that we will see this epic crossover.
In an October 2022 interview with Deadline, Kevin Feige responded to a question about the X-Men's MCU arrival. "That's what Jennifer Walters just asked the robot in the final episode of She-Hulk and I'll give you the same answer he gave, which is -- I don't remember, no answer is what I think he gave," Feige explained. "But Deadpool and Wolverine [are both in upcoming MCU installment Deadpool 3], y'know, we're getting close."
