How Do Demigods Get Claimed in Percy Jackson and the Olympians?
In Percy Jackson and the Olympians, we come across a world where Greek gods have offspring with human beings. Known as demigods, these characters get sent to camps where they learn more about their powers and backgrounds.
In the series, claiming is when a god acknowledges a demigod as his or her offspring. This is because the gods have a choice whether they wish to claim the child or not.
The process of claiming differs according to the camps. While there are camps where claiming happens via a hologram projected over the child's head, others have an even more complicated process.
At Camp Half-Blood, a child usually needs to demonstrate their godly parent's skill or power. This would in itself symbolize the god's act of claiming the demigod as his or her own.
What Happens if a God Doesn't Claim Their Offspring?
Not all demigods get claimed by their parents, even if they arrive at camp. While the reason behind this is never mentioned, there is a possibility that some gods have lost track of the number of offspring they have with mortals.
Some demigods do not get claimed so they can be protected by their parents. This is because once a demigod learns who his parent is, he can be hunted down by the enemies of their parents.
The unclaimed demigods at Camp Half-Blood get placed in Hermes' Cabin. Because they feel neglected by their parents, they often start to harbor ill will toward the Olympians. This is what led to the Second Titan War.
When Does Percy Get Claimed in Percy Jackson?
Percy was born to a mortal mom, Sally Jackson, and a god, Poseidon. When he was 13 years old, Percy was claimed by Poseidon as his child.
Poseidon typically claims his children by making his symbol appear over their head. This is a hologram of a glowing green trident, which symbolizes his power over the sea.
In The Lightning Thief book, Poseidon claims Percy after healing his wound following a Hellhound attack. In doing this, Poseidon breaks the Pact of the Big Three. Of course, Poseidon has his reasons for choosing to do this.
