Kurapika surprised everyone in Hunter x Hunter when he met Gon and the others in Yorknew City and has become immensely stronger. While it is true that he trained hard to master his abilities, it seemed that Kurapika created a Nen contract.
Kurapika is a Conjurer. This gives him the ability to create objects based on his imagination. He becomes a Specialist when his eyes turn scarlet.
Nen contracts are self-imposed limitations in order to acquire power. Gon did the same which almost cost his life so he can beat Pitou in one fight.
All Nen users can do the same although it is not generally advisable because of the possible consequences one might have to suffer from it.

What is Kurapika's Nen Contract?
Kurapika wanted to take revenge after his clan was massacred by the Phantom Troupe. His life’s mission is to claim all the scarlet eyes that were taken.
He knows that his enemies are far stronger than him which is why Kurapika created a Nen contract that can provide him immense power.
As mentioned, Kurapika is both a Conjurer and a Specialist. But he also mastered the mechanics of Manipulation and Limitations and incorporate Enhancement and Emission.
To top it off, he is also proficient in Transmutation. This means that Kurapika can access all six Nen types.
His contract was placed on the usage of his chains against the Phantom Troupe. The Limitation that he placed on the chain put his life at risk, giving his abilities a huge boost. Below are the abilities he can do with his chain:
- Dowsing Chain – this is used under normal circumstances, particularly for offense and defense. He uses this as well for investigative purposes.
- Chain Jail – this is used to restrain the members of the Phantom Troupe. It can shut off the aura of the prisoner, preventing them to use Nen.
- Emperor Time – this is active when Kurapika’s eyes turn scarlet. He can then utilize all types of Nen. However, every time Kurapika uses this skill, his lifespan shortens by an hour.
- Holy Chain – this can cure wounds and intense injuries within seconds.
- Judgement Chain – this ability allows the chain to enter the victim’s body and wrap itself around their heart. The blade at the end of the chain can pierce the victim’s heart and kill him or her.
- Steal Chain – this allows Kurapika to steal one of the target’s Nen abilities.
- Stealth Dolphin – this is somewhat related to stealing one’s ability but a dolphin-like construct appears when this is activated that informs Kurapika about the ability’s name, function, and conditions.
It is still unknown if Kurapika will complete his mission or if his contract will eventually end Kurapika's life. Hopefully, it will be the former.
