Later this month, the MCU animated series What If...? will return for a second season with a new batch of multiversal stories just in time for the holiday season.

Just like in the first season, it will offer different versions of various MCU events that are set in alternate timelines across the multiverse. A trailer was released last month that offered fans a sneak peek at the new stories that they have in store for the season.

There is a lot of hope that the upcoming season will be more creative and inventive in its ideas and storytelling than the first season and the episodes will take on directions that are unexpected for MCU fans.

Now, as we're getting closer to its release, we finally have the first social media reactions to the highly-anticipated new season.

Recently, a special screening event for the second season of What If...? was held where critics and journalists in attendance were able to watch the first two episodes in advance.

In the first episode titled "What If Nebula Joined the Nova Corps?" which is set in a world where Ronan deposes Thanos long before the events of Infinity War, Nebula joined the Nova Corps to prove her detective chops.

The other episode, "What If Happy Hogan Saved Christmas?," will see Tony Stark's head security Happy Hogan saving the Avengers after Justin Hammer sieged the Avengers Tower during a holiday party.

So far, most of the responses have been positive with praises towards the animation, entertainment value, and homages to the classic films that they are inspired from. Most of them noted that the holiday episode is a riff on Die Hard.

This is an encouraging sign about the new season's quality since it sounds like they really tried to experiment with various modes of genre and storytelling in the new batch of episodes.

You can never go wrong with paying homage to well-known classics and it is exciting to see what the MCU version will look like, especially with the existing characters that we also know and love for years now.

However, the reception might still change in the coming weeks as more people watch the new season and it's interesting to see if the favorable reactions will continue throughout all nine episodes.

The second season of What If...? will premiere on Disney+ this December 22.
