The MCU animated series What If...? has been giving us an alternative look at some of our favorite characters in the franchise. The eight episodes that have aired so far have been a joy to watch and the individual stories that we saw are expected to tie in at the season finale that is coming this Wednesday. Luckily, a second season has been already commissioned a long time ago and we now have a hint on what we should expect in the next batch of multiversal stories.
Speaking with EW, series head writer A.C. Bradley has confirmed that all episodes for the second season have been already written. "Going into the second season, we're sticking with anthology form, and it's going to be all-new stories, lots of fun, new heroes, and pulling more from Phase Four than we were obviously able to this season," she said.
Bradley also teased that we might see characters from the Phase Four films make an appearance in the next season, "Hopefully, we'll see hints of Eternals and Shang-Chi and the Black Widow characters. The fun of What If...? is that we get to explore the entire infinite multiverse, so we try and bounce around as much as we can. I want to play with all these characters, and as much as I love Captain Carter, we've got to share the love. I'm very excited to show new worlds, new heroes."
It is not surprising that some of the Phase Four characters could be integrated into the next season since the films have already been in production for some time which also means the What If...? creative team probably has access to them before they were released. It is exciting to find out which characters from the Phase Four films are they going to use in the next season and what situations will they play in. Also, hopefully, most of the actors will get to reprise their roles.
Regarding the upcoming season finale, Bradley teased, "We will pop into and re-meet some of our heroes from the previous episodes, including the lovely Captain Carter [Hayley Atwell], Strange Supreme, Party Thor [Chris Hemsworth], and even Killmonger [Michael B. Jordan]." It sounds like it will be an Avengers-type of finale, continuing the cliffhanger from the previous episode.
The highly-anticipated season finale of What If...? is set to stream on Disney+ this coming Wednesday.
