For years, Sean Kelly has been making voice impressions of Rick and Morty. He has shared these impressions on TikTok, which led him to become famous on the social media platform.
So when fans of the show learned that Adult Swim was looking for someone to replace the characters voiced by Roiland, they quickly suggested Kelly.
There was even a Change.org petition for Adult Swim to hire Sean Kelly for the role.
Did Sean Kelly Ever Get the Role?
Since he signed an NDA for his audition, we don't really know what happened to Sean Kelly's Rick and Morty audition.
Back in June 2023, Kelly released a TikTok video to give his fans an update on whether he got the role.
He shared that he "was not the person to ask" and that he "wasn't sure what their plan is."
So when Kelly uploaded a TikTok today asking for financial assistance because he was put in a bind by the network, this got his fans wondering if he was hired and then fired.
Fans of the impressionist saw an earlier TikTok of Sean Kelly's where he allegedly asked for money because he didn't get the role. The Reddit post also claimed that Kelly was in a financial bind and that Adult Swim "f***ed over his family."
Since the TikTok video blew up, Kelly decided to take it down along with the links he previously shared. He shared an Instagram story thanking everyone who helped with the donations.
He also promised that he would do a follow-up video to "address some of the confusion" left behind in the comments.
Kelly also shared that he did not want to "look like I'm rallying people" with his frustrations for the network.
The comment also comes at a time when he's dealing with a family issue so things have been pretty negative for him.
He also shares that he lost the role due to a "technicality" but does not really dive into things because of his NDA.
After snooping around, one Tiktoker also shared his experience with a network and why he believes Adult Swim is unlikely to hire Kelly.
Although he makes a pretty interesting point, we cannot guarantee that this is really what happened between Kelly and Adult Swim.
Some fans also think that Kelly lost the role because he isn't in the SAG (Screen Actor's Guild). But again, this has not been confirmed by Kelly or Adult Swim.
How Did Adult Swim Respond to the Sean Kelly Controversy?
