Gyogyo first appeared in One Piece Episode 392, New Rivals Gather! The 11 Supernovas, and in One Piece Chapter 498, The Eleven Supernovas.

At a glance, Gyogyo looks like any ordinary henchman or a captain of a pirate crew.

He is a huge man, defined by his tribal tattoos, large lips, bulbous nose, and freckles. He also wears a distinctive tank top with the phrase “GREAT MAN” printed on it.

Gyogyo is introduced in One Piece as one of the founding members of the Bonney Pirates.

He is one of Jewelry Bonney’s trusted confidantes and has been with her ever since she escaped from the cipher pol agent, Alpha, in Sorbet Kingdom.

In the beginning, Gyogyo is like any ordinary child who bullies Bartholomew Kuma due to his appearance. He was one of those children who threw stones at Kuma, in the belief that he was not nine years old.

If we can recall, the nine-year-old Kuma, along with Ginny, wound up in Sorbet Kingdom after they escaped from God Valley, where the Poverty Eradication Tournament was held.

They both decided to stay at a chapel in the kingdom, and that’s when they encountered Gyogyo.

While Kuma doesn’t really mind his bullies, Ginny, on the other hand, can’t resist hitting Gyogyo and the rest of the bullies.

Kuma then used the powers of the Paw-Paw devil fruit to remove Gyogyo’s pain, despite knowing that he would inflict it on himself instead.

Since then, Gyogyo has become good friends with Kuma and Ginny. He used to accompany them whenever they sold wood.

At some point, Gyogyo also had a crush on Ginny, and he attempted to pursue her by giving her freshly caught fish.

After King Bekori usurped the position from Bulldog, Gyogyo tried to help Kuma overthrow the corrupt king.

However, they were all imprisoned, but not until the Freedom Fighters, together with Monkey D. Dragon, arrived to free them all.

When Ginny died, Gyogyo was also there to support Kuma in raising Jewelry Bonney.

He was one of the first people to discover that Bonney also contracted the same Sapphire Scales disease, and he was one of the most eager to find a doctor for Bonney.

Gyogyo also received news about King Bekori’s comeback. He also fought alongside Kuma in overthrowing King Bekori the second time around.

Over the years, Gyogyo has been Bonney and Kuma’s support system, in addition to Conney, the Queen Dowager of Sorbet Kingdom.

They both took care of Bonney, who returned to the Sorbet Kingdom after receiving treatment from Dr. Vegapunk.

When Gyogyo found out that Bonney had been held by Alpha, a cipher-pol agent disguised as a nurse, he was one of the three people who built Bonney's ship.

They both escaped the Sorbet Kingdom, and later the ship became known as the Jewelry Margherita of the Bonney Pirates.

So far, there's been no update about Gyogyo in One Piece since he was arrested by Admiral Akainu and the Marines.

The Marines managed to arrest them after they were defeated by the Blackbeard Pirates upon making it to the New World.

It was only Bonney who successfully escaped thanks to her quick thinking and, of course, her devil fruit abilities.

In the latest chapters of One Piece, it was revealed that Bonney mistook Gyogyo for a fisherman. It was only after Conney revealed to Bonney that Gyogyo was a ruffian who had a huge reputation across the Sorbet Kingdom.

The backstory of Kuma and Bonney continues to unfold in the latest chapters of One Piece, so expect to see more of Gyogyo’s appearance in the manga.
