Dr. Edwin Jenner (played by Noah Emmerich) revealed one of the biggest turning points of the apocalypse to Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln).

In The Walking Dead season 1 finale titled TS-19 (or "Test Subject" 19), Rick reunites with his wife, son, and best friend Shane at the CDC headquarters in Atlanta.

As the franchise approached a couple more spin-offs, including The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live, this episode remains one of the most mind-blowing secrets to shift the show's drive.

At the time, Dr. Jenner was the last researcher left at the CDC, who spent time studying his wife, hence, the title of the episode, in an attempt to study the after-effects of being bitten by a "walker" (zombie).

However, considering that the rest of the world's research facilities have proven unproductive in finding the cure to the zombie pandemic, this CDC headquarters was no different.

With nothing to hold onto, the establishment threatened to self-destruct to prevent the spreading of the disease further.

Before Rick and the others get their chance to escape, though, Dr. Jenner whispers to him, "It's in our blood, we're all carriers."

The Biggest Secret Takes an Anti-Climactic Turn for The Walking Dead

What made the episode "anti-climactic" was the storyline being dragged. By leaving the mystery behind Jenner's words, fans don't get to find out his secret until the second season.

This left the series stunned, which could explain the ongoing spin-offs to expand the story and build its world further. But hey, who doesn't love apocalyptic drama series, right?

The Walking Dead comic book (which is what the series is based on) creator Robert Kirkman admitted back in 2014 that the TS-19 episode was one of his biggest regrets in writing the series.

"If I had to do it again, I wouldn't have done the CDC episode," Kirkman told The Hollywood Reporter, "It gave away too much information and was such a big change very early on in the series."

Meanwhile, fans can keep up to speed with The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live on multiple streaming platforms.
