After four seasons, HBO's Westworld got no chance to properly say goodbye as it faced abrupt cancellation despite being initially renewed for a fifth and final season.
Westworld star Luke Hemsworth expressed his disappointment in the dystopian sci-fi series' cancellation via an interview with Entertainment Tonight.
"You hope these things go forever, but everyone's got their own reasons," he said. "I'm very thankful for my part in that series, and that journey was a big part of my life, but yeah, [Westworld getting canceled] was disappointing."
According to Hemsworth, who plays Ashley Stubbs, ideas were brewing for the show, but all of it went to the wire, and there’s nothing one can do but mourn and then move on.
"I think the idea right from the start was to go full circle and come back to being about loops, about human beings and robots being stuck in that trajectory." Unfortunately, we get cut off, but it's the nature of the world. You can't get depressed about it. "You move on, and it opens up new doors," explained the actor.
Based on the 1973 movie of the same name, Westworld made its television debut in 2016. The story revolves around the titular amusement park and its android hosts fighting for autonomy in the world.
Following the cancellation news, avid fans of the show took their frustrations to change.org, starting petitions to save the fifth season.
Although the reason for abolishing the show hasn't been verified yet, it is believed that the decline in viewership was a contributing factor to the show’s sad fate.
Along with Hemsworth, the series also starred Evan Rachel Wood, Thandiwe Newton, Ed Harris, Jeffrey Wright, Tessa Thompson, Aaron Paul, Angela Sarafyan, and James Marsden.
The main cast reportedly will still receive compensation despite the show’s cancellation.
