We Almost Saw a G1 Version of Megatron in Bumblebee

Now that Paramount Pictures has confirmed that Bumblebee is a reboot, it seems like the Transformers franchise is now in a much better place than it was when Michael Bay was helming them. Granted, fans are a bit nervous since a producer stated that they want a sequel to be more Bay-influenced. Yeesh. Since the reboot seems to be more interested in the G1 Transformers, fans are probably sad to know that Megatron almost appeared but was cut.

Director Travis Knight told Entertainment Weekly that there were plans to include Megatron in that awesome opening sequence, but was cut because it would have been costly. Plus, they considered making this a part of the Bay movies so they felt that adding Megatron would have messed with the "continuity." Even though Bay tends to ignore his continuity but let's not get into that right now.

Here is Knight's full statement:

I had this whole thing that I boarded out myself where I had Megatron in there. He comes into the scene just absolutelylevelling sh—, just laying waste to everything in his path like Sauron in The Lord of the Rings. We had a [new] design and a partial build and everything. I was so excited, I couldn't wait to do it, but then as we started going through, it was going to be too expensive and really did fly in the face of continuity with the [Michael] Bay films. But let's be honest, I'm sure they have a fleeting sense of continuity themselves.
[It] created issues for people who were unfamiliar with the franchise. I wanted to make sure this film was a tribute to the live-action films as well as the cartoon, that there were layers of enjoyment for fans of both.

There's always the next movie.

Bumblebee should be coming to Blu-Ray very soon.
