What Did Giyu Mean When He Said He’s Different from the Other Hashira?

In the pilot episode of the Hashira Training arc, Giyu Tomioka and the other Hashira attend an emergency meeting called by Amane Ubuyashiki on behalf of her sick husband, Kagaya.

They discussed the prerequisites for manifesting the demon slayer mark, as well as Muzan's change of plans now that Nezuko had overcome the sun.

Following the discussion, the rest of the Hashira, except for Giyu, insisted on discussing their plans for the approaching war against Muzan.

Sanemi, in particular, disputes with Giyu, who wants to stay out of their path, claiming that he is different from them, which irritates the other hashira, including Obanai. So, what exactly does Giyu mean by this?

While Sanemi believes Giyu is simply arrogant, the true reason Giyu says he's different from the other hashira is attributed to his guilt over the deaths of his friends during the Final Selection.

Giyu believes he is unworthy of the title of Water Hashira, and his survivor's guilt continues to torment him to this day, contrary to Sanemi and Obanai's belief that he is simply arrogant and selfish.

Technically, What Makes Giyu Different from the Other Hashira?

While the pillars of the Demon Slayer Corps share the same goal of ending Muzan and his wicked deeds, they are different from each other in terms of personality, combat style, ideals, and inner struggles.

It's not surprising that some of them don't get along, particularly Giyu, who has a habit of isolating himself and prefers to work alone without the support of others.

It's as if his isolation is a type of penance to make amends for his mistakes and protect those around him.

Giyu’s Personality Clash with the Other Hashira

Known for his calm, composed, and reserved demeanor, Giyu Tomioka rarely shows emotion to other people, including the rest of the hashira.

He is always in serious mode, like a robot who carries out Kagaya’s orders, no more, no less.

However, there are instances when he can get along well with the other hashira, such as Shinobu, who enjoys teasing him about his aloofness, clumsiness, and overall stoicism.

Giyu’s Combat Style Is Unique among the Hashira

While the other hashiras' battle techniques are more flashy and edgy, Giyu Tomioka's combat style emphasizes his fluid, flowing moves that resemble water.

After all, he is an expert in the Water Breathing technique.

Giyu Has a Different Perception of Nezuko

Giyu Tomioka was one of the first to recognize Nezuko as more than just the ferocious and merciless demon Muzan had created.

He not only recognizes Nezuko's humanity but also proposes that she and Tanjiro train under his master.

Most importantly, Giyu anticipates the day when Nezuko will be cured, distinguishing him from the other hashiras' disdain and prejudice toward demons in the series.
