The Harry Potter series is one of the biggest movie franchises of all time and it still goes on until today with the Fantastic Beasts prequel films. Given that Hollywood studios nowadays are relying more on their IPs for content in their streaming services, it seems that it would be inevitable for Warner Bros. to do a Harry Potter series for HBO Max. Now, it looks like that may be in the works.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, during a conference hosted by Bloomberg, Warner Bros. CEO Ann Sarnoff briefly discussed the company's plan for one of its most important franchises which is the Harry Potter series. She said, "We would love to develop more original Harry Potter series, and we regularly talk to J.K. Rowling and her team. It’s got to be right though. Whatever we do has to be true to the canon, and true to the ethos of the Wizarding World, and who Harry is."

Sarnoff's quote was a bit vague as she didn't specify if the "original Harry Potter series" that she was talking about is for a potential HBO Max series or another series of theatrical films. Given that there is an ongoing Fantastic Beasts series that is expected to run for three more films (including the upcoming The Secrets of Dumbledore), there is a possibility that Sarnoff was talking about a potential Harry Potter series for HBO Max.

There is no doubt that there is still demand for Harry Potter content today. The Fantastic Beasts films are doing very solid at the box office. The play Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is doing very well in terms of attendance in both Broadway and West End runs. The books are still best-sellers. At this point, it seems that doing a TV series set in the Harry Potter universe might be something that Warner Bros. and HBO Max would like to do to up their content and possibly boost more subscribers.

Fortunately, there is a Harry Potter reunion special coming to this New Year's Day, January 1 where we would see the original cast members reunite in celebration of the franchise's 20th anniversary. There is also the upcoming film Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore that is set to be released in North American theaters this coming April 15, 2022.
