WandaVision Showrunner Says Killing Off [SPOILERS] was a 'Big Decision'

WandaVision might be strange but at least it doesn't have a high body count. On the other hand, the show's only casualty so far is understandably heartbreaking for the Marvel Cinematic Universe and showrunner Jac Schaeffer admits it was a "big decision" to make.

In WandaVision Season 1 Episode 4, viewers finally got to see what's happening outside of Westview and got to learn about Monica Rambeau's past. The agent of S.W.O.R.D. was lost in The Blip but when she finally returned, she discovered that her mother Maria Rambeau had died of cancer.

Maria's death was heartbreaking not just for her daughter but also for MCU fans who have been hoping to see more of the character in new projects. Likewise, Schaeffer admitted to Entertainment Tonight admitted that it was a tough decision to make since Maria was one of the most beloved characters in the franchise.

"It was a big decision," Schaeffer said. She also pointed out Lashana Lynch's character was "so important in Captain Marvel" and that Maria was "a tremendous character."

"We did not make that decision lightly," Schaeffer continued although she added that the death of Maria "really worked for Monica's character and what it meant for her."

Although Maria is gone, there is little doubt that her legacy lives on in Monica, who is now working for the organization she started. "We also really loved the idea that Maria had built S.W.O.R.D. from the ground up," Schaeffer stated.

Maria was introduced in Captain Marvel where she was played by Lynch. The character was one of the most important figures in the film, having helped Carol Danvers reconnect with her humanity. Needless to say, we're going to miss Maria after everything that she had done for the MCU.

A new episode of WandaVision airs every Friday on Disney+.
