VTubers (short for Virtual YouTubers) aren’t anything new as Kizuna Ai has been a household name among anime fans for years now. Though it was only in 2020 that VTubers exploded in popularity.

This is thanks to a variety of factors, one of which is that many people were indoors in 2020 due to the pandemic.

On top of this, technology has evolved enough that more companies were able to debut their own VTubers.

The popularity of VTubers was boosted by agencies such as Hololive and Nijisanji in 2020.

While most VTubers were based in Japan at first, their popularity resulted in more non-Japanese folks debuting as VTubers too.

At this point, VTubers are a mainstay in the otaku community. Aside from live streams, many VTubers are also singers, while some are entertainers that have crossed over to anime.

For instance, many VTubers have been invited to radio shows and stage events to promote shows alongside voice actors.

They have also been tapped as brand ambassadors for games.

Due to their popularity, there has also been an increase in manga and light novel series that feature stories involving VTubers.

VTuber Legend Anime Announcement, Release Date

One of these is VTuber Legend: How I Went Viral after Forgetting to Turn Off My Stream, a light novel series that follows Yuki, who streams as the VTuber Awayuki Kokorone.

While she first begins as a prim and proper VTuber, she accidentally leaves her stream on, showcasing her more crude real-life personality.

But instead of being fired, her company welcomes this as her stream became a huge hit.

To announce the series, a mock stream was released on the KADOKAWA Anime YouTube channel that stars Ayane Sakura as Awayuki Kokorone.

Aside from the mock live stream which revealed the main character’s voice actress, no other info about the series was revealed.

Given that there’s no proper look at the anime yet, it might be a while before we see the show.

So, expect to see the VTuber Legend anime in late 2023 or early 2024 at the earliest.
