As an extra treat for fans of the series, Vinland Saga Season 2 released a special anime-original short video entitled Episode 6.5 – Drowning in the Shadow.
This new anime short is just a bit over two minutes long, though it features a scene that was not in the anime and was created specifically for the show.
As a bonus, this short is available to stream for free on YouTube worldwide.
Vinland Saga Season 2: One of Winter 23's Biggest Titles
In the sea of high school romance shows and isekai titles, Vinland Saga stands out as a serious and often brutal anime for fans who want to watch something a bit more hard-hitting than other shows.
The show’s first season aired from July to December 2019, and it was praised for its impressive depiction of the Viking age, as well as for its complex characters. It soon became among the highest-rated shows on MyAnimeList.
Given the first season’s positive reception, it came as no surprise that the anime got renewed for a second season.
Though instead of being animated by Wit Studio, MAPPA took over animation duties for Season 2.
While the first season started strong action-wise, Season 2 is a bit different as it follows the slower Farmland Arc from the manga.
On top of the already slow arc, the anime also extended some scenes to slow down the pace even more.
Some viewers voiced their complaints over the slower pace, though the overall sentiment is still positive as the anime was able to explore the characters more.
Plus, series creator Makoto Yukimura was a fan of the changes in Season 2.
Vinland Saga Season 2 Episode 6.5 Short
Now, more anime-only scenes have been released in the form of a special short episode.
While this is not required viewing to understand the story, it is a must-watch for fans as it highlights more of Thorfinn.
The episode starts with Thorfinn raiding a village as part of Askeladd’s crew. He then enters a house, and the scene cuts to him as an adult as he sees a family inside.

Following its release, the anime’s official Twitter account also shared Yukimura’s response to the anime-original work.
He said that he is grateful to the staff for animating this scene as it shows Thorfinn’s dilemma clearly.
Vinland Saga Season 2 continues with Episode 6 today which will be streamed on Crunchyroll and Netflix.
