Venom Just Blasted Right Past Fantastic Beasts 2 In China

Venom might no longer be available on the big screen here in the US, but in Cut in China, Sony's very first Symbiote Standalone in its Sony Universe of Marvel Characters continues to make waves across the international film market. Now, with Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald out to compete, it looks like Venom continues to flex its muscles, destroying the Harry Potter spinoff at the box office.

According to a report by Screen Rant,Venom just dove right into China this week. Raking in $111 million, the film's managed to gather Sony's highest opening record ever in the East Asian country – which would seem like quite a surprise to some considering the poor critic reviews of the film.

Still, the film's campy nature has charmed many off its feet, and in China Venom has been repeating its #1 weekend numbers, crushing films like Fantastic Beasts 2 beneath is feet. According to the Box Office Guru, while Venom managed to seduce $51 million from the Chinese box office this week, the latest Fantastic Beasts movie settled for a poor $37.5 million.

Of course, this shouldn't really come as a surprise. Chinese moviegoers have never really been fond of magic. Because of cultural differences, the Chinese have never been really supportive of the Harry Potter franchise. Then there's also the fact that the film has such poor reviews; many critics and fans have been naming the film one of the worst entries in the franchise to date.
