Venom might have pretty low critic reviews, but with all of its earnings at the box office, the very first entry in Sony's Universe of Marvel Characters has become a wild success – one that's outperformed not only Sony entries but the mutant entries from 20th Century Fox.
Last week, Venom reached a total of $780 million at the global box office thanks to the hefty lump that the comic book movie managed to rake from the film market in China, and now with a few more weeks to left in the East Asian country's cinemas, CBR expects the film to push past Fox's Deadpool.
The studio's very first R-rated comic book movie brought in $783.1 million when it released back in 2016, becoming Fox's highest earning film in the X-Men franchise. If Venom can earn even $5 million more in China then the film would beat Deadpool and all of the other X-Men films under Fox.
If Venom does even better, then it could potentially outperform Sony's Spider-Man and the $821.7 million earnings that it raked in back in 2002.
This is definitely good news for Sony. Venom has been an unlikely success despite its troubled production and its poor critic reviews, with many lambasting the film for its poor storytelling and its plot. Still, despite its many shortcomings, fans seem to enjoy Venom for its humor and for the bond that Tom Hardy's Eddie Brock shares with the Symbiote. The film has the strong potential of becoming a cult classic someday, who knows.
