Urusei Yatsura Secures New Anime TV Show for Shogakukan's 100th Anniversary


One of the classics of manga series, Urusei Yatsura, is finally returning this year as the manga series of Rumiko Takahashi secures a new TV show in celebration of the 100th anniversary of Shogakukan’s Weekly Shonen Sunday.

Urusei Yatsura will finally be back on a brand-new project as part of the commemoration of Shogakukan’s milestone of their 100th anniversary. The series is a classic! More than that, it is written by Rumiko Takahashi who has been one of the most notable in the field of manga having one of the longest runs in his career and producing famous titles such as RIN-NE, Inuyasha, Ranma ½, and Maison Ikkoku.

The story of Urusei Yatsura follows Ataru Moroboshi with the alien, Lum, in the belief that she is Ataru’s wife following an accidental proposal to her.

A teaser trailer has been released for the upcoming reboot of Urusei Yatsura which will be produced by David Animation and staffed by veterans who created JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Golden Wind. Albeit short, the teaser was enough to hype the fans of the classic series.

Urusei Yatsura was published in Shogakukan’s Weekly Shonen Sunday from 1978 to 1987 where it had 374 chapters compiled into 34 tankōbon volumes. The title got an anime adaptation produced by Kitty Films from 1981 to 1986 having 195 all in all. It also had 12 OVAs and six films. It was that big that it has been a classic title over the years.

The career of Rumiko Takahashi was jumpstarted by Urusei Yatrusa which has 35 million copies in circulation. It became the recipient of the Shogakukan Manga Award in 1980. The TV series adaptation of Urusei Yatsura also got a lot of credit with the use of famous pop songs as its opening and closing themes.

Shogakukan has been a publisher of dictionaries, comics or manga, literature, non-fiction, DVDs, and other forms of media in Japan. They had been in the business since 1922 and Urusei Yatsura is part of their celebration in their celebration of being in the industry for a century.

Urusei Yatsura is yet to have a definite release date but it will surely be out this year, 2022.
