Top Gun: Maverick Dethrones Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness with $1 Billion Total Earnings


Who would've thought that after more than 30 years, the sequel to Tom Cruise's 1986 classic Top Gun would dominate the box office again? Last week, Top Gun: Maverick overthrows Marvel's recent milestone Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness at the domestic box office. In its final week, The Top Gun sequel officially crossed $1 billion at the global box office, beating the Doctor Strange sequel as the highest-grossing film of the year. More impressively, Cruise's Top Gun: Maverick is the second film to gross $1 billion, following Marvel's Spider-Man: No Way Home.

Top Gun: Maverick grossed $521 million at the domestic box office and $484.7 million at the international box office, which rounds up a total of $1.006 billion worldwide total earnings. With that impressive box office receipts, it is now the highest-grossing film of the year, overthrowing Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, which earned a total of $943 million at the worldwide box office.

After a month of screening, the Top Gun sequel is now Tom Cruise's highest-grossing film in his lifelong career, beating 2018's Mission: Impossible – Fallout, which earned $791 Million worldwide. It's also the second movie to hit $1 billion amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, a monumental record first reached by Spider-Man: No Way Home.

Test pilot Captain Pete "Maverick" Mitchell (Cruise) has purposely dodged an advancement in rank after thirty years of service. One day Maverick is called to be put in charge of training a group of Top Gun graduates for a specialized mission under the orders of his fellow naval aviator friend and former rival, Tom "Iceman" Kazansky (Kilmer), who is the commander of the U.S. Pacific Fleet. Among them is Lieutenant Bradley "Rooster" Bradshaw (Teller), the son of Maverick's late best friend Nick "Goose" Bradshaw (Edwards).
