Tomb Raider TV Series Officially Happening at Amazon with Fleabag Writer

Following the release of the Alicia Vikander-led Tomb Raider film back in 2018, which had a solid reception, there have been questions about what's next for the reboot of the franchise. However, news came last year that the producers lost the rights and the plans for a sequel have been canceled.

Fortunately, it looks like the beloved video game property is going back to the screen again as The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed that Amazon is developing a TV series based on the Tomb Raider game series with Fleabag and Killing Eve writer Phoebe Waller-Bridge attached to pen.

So far, the plot details are being kept under wraps at the moment. Waller-Bridge, who recently renewed her overall deal with Amazon, is not expected to star in the series. She will also serve as the executive producer alongside Ryan Andolina, Amanda Greenblatt, and Dmitri M. Johnson.

This news is in lieu of the current trend in Hollywood where video game properties have become the hottest commodity as studios are trying to make film and TV show adaptations of the beloved titles. For example, the currently airing HBO's The Last of Us has been making records in its viewership ratings.

This is not the only video game-based adaptation project that Amazon is currently working on at the moment. They recently gave a series order to the God of War TV series adaptation while production is currently ongoing for the Fallout TV series. They are also working on a series adaptation of Mass Effect.

It is exciting to hear that Tomb Raider is getting a series adaptation since it is an opportunity for the creators to do long-form storytelling for an adventure tale like this. Waller-Bridge is also an acclaimed writer so having her come on board is a good sign regarding its potential quality.

It would also be interesting to see who they'll eventually cast in the role of Lara Croft and follow in the footsteps of Oscar winners Angelina Jolie and Alicia Vikander.
