Tom Holland Recalls Failed Audition for Star Wars: The Force Awakens

Failed auditions are part of every actor’s journey, no matter how great and popular they are now. Tom Holland is one of the youngest A-list actors in the current era. His role as Peter Parker in Marvel’s Spider-Man franchise has given him the ticket to stardom. Marvel Studios is one of the biggest franchises in the world, yet the actor recently revealed that he also auditioned for another major franchise, which is Star Wars, but ended up losing it to somebody else. Could you imagine him as John Boyega’s Finn in Star Wars: The Force Awakens?

“I remember my audition for ‘Star Wars,’ I was like four or five auditions in, and I think I was auditioning for John Boyega’s role. I remember doing this scene with this lady, bless her, and she was just a drone. So I was doing all of this, like, ‘We gotta get back to the ship!’ And she was going, ‘Bleep, bloop, bleep bloop.’ I just couldn’t stop laughing. I found it so funny. And I felt really bad because she was trying hard to be a convincing android or drone or whatever they’re called. Yeah, I didn’t get the part. That wasn’t my best moment.” Holland told BackStage.

If we were to examine them, Holland and John Boyega share little similarities, but both actors possess a different kind of charm and skills that could give one-liners a sense of unique wit. Boyega’s Finn is formerly known as "FN-2187," and a First Order stormtrooper who served alongside Captain Phasma (Gwendoline Christie) and Kylo Ren (Adam Driver). He was taken from his family at a young age and sold to the First Order to join their ever-growing army. He had spent most of his life being trained to be an effective, loyal, and merciless soldier.

Despite Boyega’s performance as Finn being satisfactory, as he has received praise, won the BAFTA Rising Star Award, and was nominated for the Saturn Award for Best Actor, it still did disappoint some fans. Boyega's character was initially positioned as one of the lead characters in the 2015 film Star Wars: The Force Awakens, where he played an active role in the main action and was even hinted at being force-sensitive. Following the first film, Boyega's character was never given much room to grow in 2017's Star Wars: The Last Jedi or 2019's Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.

Holland gained attention after he was introduced as Spider-Man in Captain America: Civil War. He's since played the superhero in multiple MCU films, becoming the youngest actor to do so in the Spider-Man-centered film Spider-Man: Homecoming in 2017, which was followed by Spider-Man: Far From Home in 2019 and Spider-Man: No Way Home in 2021. Additionally, rumors have it that the young star is reportedly coming back for a fourth installment to continue his reign as the web-slinger; regardless, it is always possible that fans could see Holland popping up somewhere in the Star Wars universe in the future.
