Tokyo 24th Ward Episode 2 was more introductory than the first - and this was a surprisingly good thing. Meeting main characters when they've already been through a lot and then going back to see how their struggles came to be can help viewers care about them more, while, in comparison, a more linear structure could have been a bit boring.

For one, the second episode, while largely uneventful, resolved many of our questions from the hour-long premiere. The shocking incident that brought the three friends together after one year isn't repeated, so it remains to be seen if the meat of the story will be handled well.

If you look forward to that, read on. Below, you will find our handy guide to Tokyo 24th Ward or Tokyo 24-ku Episode 3, including its release date, release time, and more.

Tokyo 24th Ward Anime Episode 2 Recap

Tokyo 24th Ward or Tokyo 24-ku is an original sci-fi anime by Studio CloverWorks. The story unfolds on an artificial island in Tokyo Bay, where childhood friends Ran, Koki and Shuuta have all but fallen apart. A year ago, a devastating fire killed Koki's sister, Asumi. Shuuta, who tried to save her and failed, gives up his dream to become a hero and instead works in his parents' bakery. Ran engages in illegal activities such as graffiti art, while Koki is a serious student.

A year later, the three boys reunite for the memorial of the fire victims. Later, at their friend Mari's restaurant, they all simultaneously receive a phone call that seems to be from Asumi. Not only do they hear their voice, but they also get a vision of Mari trapped in the tracks, while a train is approaching fast. To their shock, this becomes a reality on that same day, when Mairi chases her running dog and ends up on the tracks.

There appears to be no way to save both Mari and the passengers, but the three protagonists, who momentarily gain mysterious powers, work together once more and manage to rescue their friend.

Episode 2 is an introductory one, more so than the premiere. We get to see more of Asumi and understand how she was important to the main characters. Not only was she a wonderful sister to Koki, but she also comes across as the glue that held the mismatched squad together. She cared deeply about her community and was good at inspiring others.

Shuuta, Ran, Koki, Asumi, Mari, and other young people around their age loved to hang out in the abandoned building of their former primary school, which closed down due to low birth rates. They were, therefore, adamant, that it shouldn't be demolished, even if all the adults around them thought otherwise.

Asumi led a protest, that included making use of Ran's skills to cover the building with graffiti. Some members of the community, including the children's teacher, Shirakaba, were impressed by their will to fight for what they believed in and wanted to support them. Others, though, including Koki and Asumi's own father, the mayor of Tokyo 24th Ward, insisted that it should be demolished.

The building caught on fire soon after, possibly suggesting sabotage. Despite Mari's protests, Asumi refused to wait for the firefighters and rushed to their aid, dying in the process.

In the present day, the boys and Mari, who are still unable to make sense of the mysterious phone call and vision, reconvene for new plans.

Overall, this was an interesting episode to watch. It made me feel for the characters and wish to know them better. My only concern is the character of Asumi herself. While she seems likable enough, her death so far seems to have only served as a plot point that forces the thee male characters to change in painful ways. Mari, the only remaining female member of the group has an overly helpful and bubbly personality, doing little to help this impression, especially since the boys' other female friends are also delegated to peripheral roles.

So far, the anime is very enjoyable to watch, and I love the contrast in the boys' personalities. Moreover, Asumi still has the potential to be an important driving force, depending on what actually happened to her, and what the phone call truly meant. Nevertheless, the death of a female character for the development of male ones always leaves a bitter taste, and I miss the all-female dynamics of Wonder Egg Priority a bit.
