Todd Phillips' Joker is a Period Piece Set in 1981

Ever since Stranger Things and IT, it seems that Hollywood has been all over the 80s nostalgia. What's interesting is, it looks like Todd Phillips' Joker isn't safe from the 80s fever either.

According to DiscussingFilm, Joker is set to be a period piece which will take place in 1981. You make not think that the year has much relevance, but check out what year Batman's parents died in Batman v Superman:

Of course, it's been made clear that this film will be set outside of the DCEU, but it's still an interesting connection. Now my fan-brain is speculating that this movie is going to end with the Joker killing the Wayne's and the birth of Batman.

Though a lot of people were initially against the idea of muddling up the DCEU timeline any further, more fans are slowly getting into the idea of alternate reality spinoffs. Besides Joker, this could open up possibilities to more Elseworld stories. How about Batman: Red Mist; Superman: Red Son?

Joker is expected to start production soon this year, and the cast so far has included the likes of Joaquin Phoenix, Robert De Niro, Zazie Beetz, and Marc Maron.

Catch Joker in theaters Oct. 4, 2019.
