Todd McFarlane Says Spawn Movie Won’t Have Comic Relief Or One-Liners

Comic book movies might have been romancing levity ever since the success of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and its film's littered with witty one-liners and superhero banter, but according to Spawn comic book creator and first-time director Todd McFarlane, his Spawn movie isn't going to offer any comic relief.

McFarlane just recently went on an interview with Nerdist to help promote his upcoming project, confidently claiming that the Spawn reboot wouldn't be like any other comic book movie that anyone's ever seen. There won't be any witty lines, there won't be comic relief – instead, the film is going to be a bleak R-Rated take on everyone's favorite hellspawn.

"There's no joy," McFarlane told the news outlet. "There's gonna be no fun lines in it, and it's just gonna be this dark, ugly two hours worth of movie, which is essentially what a lot of supernatural/horror movies are anyway. There's not a lot of funny in them. And that seems to be a weird hurdle for a lot of people in this city to get over because they sort of go into a superhero/Avengers default all the time."

Of course, this isn't the first time that McFarlane's said that his Spawn movie would be dark. The comic book writer has made it pretty clear that his film would be a hard and gritty R-rated comic book movie, so if fans expect one-liners and comic relief then they ought to get their expectations sorted out. McFarlane doesn't want to fall in line, and that's probably a good thing for the comic book film genre, especially now that the DC Extended Universe is following the humorous format of the MCU.

Spawn is set to begin production in June 2019.
