Todd McFarlane Blames Venom's Low Rotten Tomatoes Scores on Old Critics

Venom is one of the odder success stories that have come out this year, getting panned by critics and a lot of love from audiences. The movie has made a ton of money worldwide and a sequel seems likely, especially with that post-credit sequence. Many fans are probably miffed at these critics for the low scores since the movie ended up entertaining a lot of folks, despite its quality.

One of those fans is Venom co-creator and Spawn creator Todd McFarlane, who thoroughly enjoyed the film.

During an interview with Yahoo, McFarlane stated that the movie succeeded in what it set out to do and actually blamed aging critics for the low Rotten Tomatoes score, which is currently at a pitiful 29%. None of that matters of course since the movie has made money and audiences really seemed to enjoy it.

"It was a big roller coaster ride. Visually, everything was coming at you. I think at times... the critics get it wrong in that they forget their age. They come in, and they're 42 years old, and they come in with their attitude and they're going, 'Stop it.' What if you were 16, 15, and you were watching this movie? You would love it... Ofcourseyou would love it."

McFarlane does admit to his bias, saying he just wanted to see the character represented properly in a visual matter. This definitely succeeded since the movie did a good job making Venom look really cool, looking much better than he did in Spider-Man 3. Fans who just wanted the movie to look cool and have good action got what they wanted, though those that would have preferred a better story were left sorely lacking.

This doesn't mean that the character can't have good stories - look at the various Spider-Man comics that feature him or Donnie Cates' current run on the character - but the movie didn't really offer that. Still, people are allowed to enjoy what they want as long as it doesn't hurt anyone and Venom did that for a lot of people.
