Three Generations of Shaft Team-Up in New Trailer

Before he was gathering superheroes as Nick Fury of the MCU, Samuel L. Jackson was his own kind of super soldier with Shaft. The franchise is going to sequel/reboot direction this year, and the new trailer brings together three generations of Shaft.

JJ, aka John Shaft Jr. (Usher), maybe a cybersecurity expert with a degree from MIT, but to uncover the truth behind his best friend's untimely death, he needs an education only his dad can provide. Absent throughout JJ's youth, the legendary locked-and-loaded John Shaft (Jackson) agrees to help his progeny navigate Harlem's heroin-infested underbelly. And while JJ's own FBI analyst's badge may clash with his dad's trademark leather duster, there's no denying family. Besides, Shaft's got an agenda of his own, and a score to settle that's professional and personal.

The original Shaft sort of didn't age well seeing that he would openly hit women, and it's funny because the film actually addresses it here in the trailer. When Shaft II goes off to hit a woman, JJ stops him for being ‘mysoginistic' to which Shaft sticks to his guns and says he's an ‘equal opportunity ass-whooper.'

What's also cool is, the movie is bringing back Richard Roundtree who played the original John Shaft back in the 70s. At 76 years old, you wouldn't expect him to be jumping around doing action anymore. Heck, Jackson himself is 70.

The movie is directed by Tim Story who directed the Ride Along franchise plus the 2005 Fantastic Four films. The script also comes from Kenya Barris (Black-ish) and Alex Barnow (The Goldbergs).

Personally, I think the movie actually looks a good bit of fun. I'm not expecting the best, but Samuel L. Jackson sure does deliver all of his lines fantastically.

Shaft comes out June 14.
