The first post-credits scene in Thor: Love and Thunder was considered one of the highlights of the film as it gave us the introduction of Hercules in the MCU played by Ted Lasso star Brett Goldstein. Similar to the other post-credits scenes in the franchise, the character is hinted to have a major presence in a future project. So, what's the next step for him after his surprising introduction?
Speaking with Uproxx, director Taika Waititi discussed the shocking debut of Hercules in the first post-credits scene to which he revealed that it was Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige's idea to cast Goldstein to play Hercules. "Kevin really wanted him to do it, and yeah, Brett’s amazing. He’s great," he said.
However, Waititi doesn't know yet how Hercules will fit into the future of the MCU after his appearance was teased whether he will be in the fifth Thor film or in another MCU project.
"And I don’t know if that’s to do with Thor, or if it’s to do with how that will develop," Waititi said. "Because, obviously, Hercules, there’s a character from the books as well. And so, yeah, this will be interesting to see because Kevin, he’s obviously the mastermind of all of these threads and how they’ll tie up and how they meet, mix and match. So I’m curious to find out myself."
Waititi also shared that he witnessed the audience's excitement in Goldstein's MCU debut during the premiere of the film as it received a roaring response. "And it was such a cool moment in the cinema where it played, that people went nuts. They were so excited," he said.
It is obvious that the film is setting up Hercules to have a major presence in the MCU. While he might be sent to Earth for a specific mission, if you look at the comics, there is a chance that the character is being set up as a possible new member of the Avengers and a formidable ally of Thor in the future.
Admittedly, Goldstein is not necessarily the ideal choice to play Hercules. However, he is a wonderful actor and comedian which probably hints at what the MCU's take on the hero will look like and he's also becoming a more recognizable name thanks to his iconic role of Roy Kent in Ted Lasso. It would be interesting to see when we will be seeing him next and, hopefully, it will be sooner than we anticipate.
