The latest Magic: The Gathering set Dominaria is meant to bring back the nostalgia by taking us back to its classic world and reprint some familiar cards like Llanowar Elves and Siege-gang Commander. However, there was one classic blue card they almost brought back: Counterspell.
MTG Head Desgner Mark Rosewater revealed this when a fan asked if Counterspell was considered for the set.
"We did talk about it. We wanted Dominaria to have some high-octane reprints, which means we discussed just about every high-profile card that potentially could come back," Rosewater said. "In the end, we decided we didn't want to bring Counterspell back to Standard and chose to pass on it, but there was honest discussion about it wherein we weighed the pros and cons."
They made the right decision to not reprint Counterspell. The two-drop counter card first printed in Alpha is too powerful for the current Standard format. Control is already powerful thanks to Teferi, Hero of Dominaria card. Just reprinting Counterspell would make the format broken.
